    THERAPY FOR NEWPORT BEACH INDIVIDUALS

Individual therapy for the rhythms of life in Newport Beach.

Newport Beach is very good at looking effortless, and that turns out to be much of the problem. When your life is the one other people point to, the boat, the house on the water, the enviable spouse, admitting that something inside it feels hollow can seem almost ungrateful. I sit with couples here who've built a life everyone envies and lost each other somewhere inside it, and who have nowhere in their social world to say so, because everyone they know is also performing fine. Wealth buys a lot of things. It doesn't buy being known, and it can actually make honesty harder, because there's so much more to protect. The strain in a Newport marriage is usually invisible from the outside. That's what makes it lonely.

Newport Beach isn't one town but a string of small, guarded worlds. Balboa Island runs on a village rhythm where neighbors know each other by name and you can walk the whole island in under an hour. Corona del Mar, Lido Isle, and Newport Coast each keep their own tight circles, from CdM's walkable village to the gated hilltops above Pelican Hill. Newport Heights and the peninsula hold their own crowd. What links them is money and the management of appearances. Careers here run to finance, real estate, wealth management, and family enterprise, much of it anchored in the high-rises of Newport Center beside Fashion Island, or in the medical world around Hoag. A firm like PIMCO sets a certain tempo, long and demanding and high-stakes. The city is car-dependent and image-dependent at once. PCH and Jamboree clog on summer afternoons, and the cost of holding onto a Newport Beach address keeps its own quiet pressure on even the households that look untouchable. The couples I see here are frequently carrying a demanding career and a demanding mortgage and a demanding social world all at once, and absorbing the strain in private, because visible struggle isn't part of the local vocabulary. The work isn't about the money. It's about giving two people who are very practiced at appearing fine a place to stop appearing, and to tell each other the truth again.

    About Individual Therapy

Individual therapy for adults navigating anxiety, relationship patterns, identity, intimacy, life transitions, and the quiet weight of carrying it all. My approach is relational, depth-oriented, and grounded. We work together to understand what's underneath, not just manage what's on the surface.

In a Newport Beach built around appearing effortless, the boat, the club, the career at a firm like PIMCO or a role at Hoag, it can be genuinely hard to admit, privately, that anything feels heavy at all. Individual therapy online provides a confidential hour that never requires being seen entering an office off PCH, held on secure video from home.

Why online sessions are a good fit for Newport Beach

Online therapy fits both the logistics and the psychology of Newport Beach. The practical side first: this is a car-dependent city where PCH and Jamboree back up badly on summer afternoons, and finance and professional-services careers at places like Newport Center run long, so adding a cross-town drive to an office is often the reason the appointment quietly disappears. A session by secure, HIPAA-compliant video removes that. You meet from your office after the market closes, or from home once the harbor goes still. The psychology matters just as much. In a community this small and this watchful, where Balboa Island and Corona del Mar function like villages, a car parked outside a local therapist's office is its own kind of announcement. Meeting online means no lobby, no overlap with someone from the club or the school, no explaining where you were. As an out-of-network, California-licensed therapist working entirely by telehealth, I offer Newport Beach clients the two things this city prizes most, real privacy and real depth, without either one costing the other.

    • No travel time across Balboa Island, Corona del Mar, Newport Coast
    • Sessions fit into work-from-home schedules
    • Privacy and discretion, with sessions from your own home

    ABOUT FANSHEN

A relational, depth-oriented therapist serving California.

I'm Fanshen Thompson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in California. I work with couples, individuals, and partnerships navigating intimacy, identity, and the slower work of becoming.

I am a certified Gottman trained couples therapist and draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, attachment theory, and somatic practices. But more than any single modality, I bring myself: a real human who has done, and continues to do, this work.

My practice is online and serves clients across California. The work is honest, grounded, and paced to what you can actually carry.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do online sessions work?

We meet over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll receive a link before each session and join from a private space at home. No app downloads or special equipment beyond a device with a camera and a stable internet connection.

Do I need a special app or platform?

No. The video platform runs in your browser. I'll send a link a few minutes before our session. You click, and we begin.

    Is this covered by insurance?

I'm an out-of-network provider. I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. I'd encourage you to call your insurance and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.

How long does it take to see results?

Most people begin to feel something shift within the first several weeks. A little more clarity, a little less alone in it. Real, lasting change is a longer arc, often months of consistent weekly work. I'll be honest with you about what I see along the way.

    What is your cancellation policy?

My cancellation policy is 24 hours. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full.

Can you see clients in Newport Beach?

In a place where discretion is close to a civic value, working online is often what makes starting therapy feel possible. Sessions run on secure video, with a California license and full telehealth privacy, so both partners join from home, or one from a Newport Center office and one from the house, without a car ever appearing outside a local lobby. I see Newport Beach couples and individuals across Balboa Island, Corona del Mar, Newport Coast, Newport Heights, the Balboa Peninsula, and Lido Isle. The closeness of these island and village communities stops being a reason to avoid care.
