Individual therapy for the rhythms of life in Pasadena.
Pasadena is full of people who are paid to be precise, and precision is a strange thing to bring home to a marriage. The JPL engineer who can model a spacecraft's descent to the meter and goes quiet when a partner asks what he's actually feeling. The Caltech postdoc and the physician who between them can explain nearly anything except why the house has felt so far apart lately. This is a city that rewards being right, being rigorous, being the one who has it handled, and those exact strengths can leave two people running a household like a well-managed lab and missing each other entirely. The couples who find me here often aren't in crisis. They're competent, accomplished, and quietly lonely inside a partnership that looks, from the outside, like it works.
Pasadena is organized around institutions, and you can feel it in the households. Caltech and JPL set the intellectual weather; Huntington Hospital, Pasadena City College, and the firms and courts downtown fill in the rest. The homes tell the same story, the Craftsman bungalows of Bungalow Heaven, the estates of Madison Heights, the leafy streets of South Pasadena and Altadena where families stay for decades. It's a city of the 210 and the 134 and the 110 crawling toward downtown, of the Rose Bowl loop on a Sunday morning, of a farmers market where you keep seeing the same faces. The relational texture here is particular. A lot of Pasadena couples are dual-career and institution-anchored: a mission timeline on one side, a hospital rotation or a teaching load on the other, plus a mortgage in one of California's steeper markets. There's a cultural layer too, plenty of families holding academic-track expectations for their kids and multigenerational ones for themselves, the sense that you're supposed to be excellent and composed and grateful all at once. What that tends to produce is a marriage that runs efficiently and connects rarely, two people who trade logistics beautifully and haven't been undefended with each other in months. Old money meets the university here, and both prize keeping things looking handled. The work I do meets the version of Pasadena that lives inside the house, not the one that shows up in the Rose Parade.
About Individual Therapy
Individual therapy for adults navigating anxiety, relationship patterns, identity, intimacy, life transitions, and the quiet weight of carrying it all. My approach is relational, depth-oriented, and grounded. We work together to understand what's underneath, not just manage what's on the surface.
Built around Caltech, JPL, and Huntington, a lot of Pasadena careers reward precision and quietly punish any admission that you are struggling. Individual therapy online gives you somewhere to set the high-performance posture down, over secure video, with no commute added to a calendar already governed by lab schedules, patient loads, or the academic year.

Why online sessions are a good fit for Pasadena
Pasadena runs on institutions, Caltech, JPL, Huntington Hospital, Pasadena City College, and on the careers those places demand: research deadlines that don't move, hospital shifts, semesters that never quite pause. If you're already sitting on the 210 or the 134 at rush hour, or inching down the 110 toward downtown, the last thing the week needs is one more cross-town appointment. Online therapy slots into a Pasadena schedule instead of competing with it. You meet from home in Bungalow Heaven or Madison Heights, from an office near the South Lake corridor, or in a quiet hour before a loop around the Rose Bowl. There's another piece to it. Pasadena can feel like a small town tucked inside Los Angeles, the same faces at the farmers market, the same overlapping circles at Caltech and Huntington. Working with a therapist based hundreds of miles north in the East Bay, licensed across California and meeting you over secure video, gives you genuine privacy without giving up genuine care.
- No travel time across Bungalow Heaven, South Pasadena, Hastings Ranch
- Sessions fit into work-from-home schedules
- Privacy and discretion, with sessions from your own home
- Available evenings and select weekend hours
A relational, depth-oriented therapist serving California.
I'm Fanshen Thompson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in California. I work with couples, individuals, and partnerships navigating intimacy, identity, and the slower work of becoming.
I am a certified Gottman trained couples therapist and draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, attachment theory, and somatic practices. But more than any single modality, I bring myself: a real human who has done, and continues to do, this work.
My practice is online and serves clients across California. The work is honest, grounded, and paced to what you can actually carry.
Frequently asked questions
How do online sessions work?
We meet over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll receive a link before each session and join from a private space at home. No app downloads or special equipment beyond a device with a camera and a stable internet connection.
Do I need a special app or platform?
No. The video platform runs in your browser. I'll send a link a few minutes before our session. You click, and we begin.
Is this covered by insurance?
I'm an out-of-network provider. I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. I'd encourage you to call your insurance and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
How long does it take to see results?
Most people begin to feel something shift within the first several weeks. A little more clarity, a little less alone in it. Real, lasting change is a longer arc, often months of consistent weekly work. I'll be honest with you about what I see along the way.
What is your cancellation policy?
My cancellation policy is 24 hours. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full.
Can you see clients in Pasadena?
From Bungalow Heaven and Madison Heights to South Pasadena, Altadena, Hastings Ranch, and the Playhouse District, I see Pasadena couples and individuals wherever they live, all online and all licensed for the whole of California. Sessions run on secure video, so a JPL household up in Altadena and a physician couple near Huntington can each hold a steady weekly hour from home, with no crawl down the 210 or the 110. In a city where lab deadlines and hospital shifts run the calendar, that steadiness usually decides whether therapy holds week to week.
